About Us

sportED is, at its core, a sports academy, focusing on providing the very best training services for players aged 3-17 years old. It is also much much more, with new exciting programs never seen in China before and unique philosophies perfect for implementing sports in schools and creating a fun, engaging sports community.

With over 40 years of combined international tennis experience and over 10 in China the sportED philosophy is to combine sport and education, using “school like” structured programs and lesson plans, to ensure well rounded student-athletes.

And after launching 3 new early year programs in China, our main focus is junior development and exposing these new teaching concepts into local and international schools alike.

Thanks to the structure of our core coaching team with each program director offering up to 5 hours a week of give back hours   – we will have over 30 hours a week to offer FREE exhibitions, trials, activity days, tennis PE and even PE teacher tennis specific education.

Our Philosophy

As a team we have developed new aspects of our programs with an amazing attention to detail. Of course our main priority is that each and every student has fun, enjoys their lessons and makes new friends – on top of this, using our 3 part philosophy and teaching methods we also want to ensure that they learn and improve. See below our “just like at school” 3 part philosophy of teaching.

1. Student-Athlete Pathway

Our student-athlete pathway consists of 9 core programs starting with our new Early Year programs that are completely new in China – from France starting at just 3 years old. We assign players to programs according to their abilities first then aspiration and finally age. The pathway is clear wherever you start, there is another level to one up to. Just like at school you have years, our programs have colors, which gives the children the chance to be in a group of friends while learning.

2. Term Curriculum

Once again just like at school each of our 9 core programs will follow a clear term curriculum, written by our tennis director, setting benchmarks for each of our 8 key aspects of development and specific for each age and level of student.

3. Benchmarks

Our Rainbow Program students will each receive what we call a player passport. In this passport, which the player should keep safe during the term, they will have the benchmarks and goals for their level for that term or year. For the Junior development Programs (ages 11+) we have report cards, just like at school. There is no pass or fail but we use these passports and report cards to simply follow our students progress and ensure they are on track.

Having worked with both local and international schools as well as the top national players, we believe these key aspects of development are the foundation of a great sport education.

While our directors are from all over the world, our core team will be internally trained  local coaches implementing the V.A.R.K teaching method.

Alan Wright

Co-Founder & Director of Junior Performance Programs

Alan is a former ATP player from the UK and one of a handful of top high level experienced coaches in Asia. His style of coaching is very hands on with a large focus on technical and tactical fundamentals. As he grew as a coach he developed “the 8 keys aspects of tennis development” which the academy now follows today.

After 8 years in China working for the best academies and traveling full time with the best ITF, ATP & WTA players, including world no.1 junior, he has combined his experiences and knowledge to create a truly all round sports platform, combining sports and education in a way that hasn’t been done before.

The programs are designed with amazing attention to detail, following the “just like at school” philosophy providing a clear pathway for children as young as 3 years old and always going the extra mile in order to achieve something special.

His main focus over the past 2 years has been to build a recognized and trusted brand sportED where players, parents and schools can go for the very highest quality of sports education.

Alan is a native English speaker, fluent in French and speaks some Spanish, Italian and Chinese.

Jennifer Wang

Co-Founder & Financial Director

Jennifer is a reliable, easy going, and enthusiastic person, with a “can do” attitude and willingness to enjoy challenges. She achieved great results in university and obtained her Master degree in Finance in New Zealand. Her financial background combined withsolid accounting experience managing multiple companies in various industries including education.

She has strong cultural awareness as she studied and worked with multinational people in New Zealand for over 9 years, which also shaping her strong independent character.

She has been involved in the sports industry for many years, especially tennis. She started playing tennis since an early age, is full of passion for tennis. Now, she is looking forward to her new exciting journey as apart of the SPORT | ED team, to create a truly amazing sports academy aiming to create something new and unique in the market.

Jenny is a native Chinese speaker and fluent in English.

Vimal Kirthi

Senior Coach & Facility Director 

Vimal started his coaching career in 2004 and is currently the Program & Facility Director for sportED at The British International School in Shanghai. He has a wealth of experience, having taught before in the Middle East, South East Asia and Europe. He holds certifications from PTR (Professional Tennis Registry), ITF (International Tennis Federation) and GPTCA (Global Professional Tennis Coach Association).

Originally from India, Vimal spent most of his youth in Oman where he was ranked No. 1 for over a decade. He is also a former Top 10 (Juniors) and Top 40 (Men’s) player in India.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and loves to play Golf and Football in his spare time. At BISS, Vimal looks to implement the sportED philosophy and policies into the programs in such a way that it caters to players of all ages and levels.

Pierre-Yves DENIEAU

Senior Coach & Facility Director

Pierre-Yves DENIEAU – new Director of Regal facility (sportED). Pierre is from France and has been a full time tennis coach for the past 10 years, coaching ITF and WTA level players in New Zealand, USA, UK and France.
